PRESIDENT MESSAGE

Warmest Greetings from the new Council of the Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine!

On behalf of the new Council of the term 2024 - 2026, it is my distinct privilege to address our esteemed members and partners as we embark on an exciting new chapter in advancing Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science in Malaysia.

Since our inception in 1973, under the visionary leadership of such luminaries as Tan Sri Dr. Majid Ismail, Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Jegathesan Manikavasagam, Prof. Dr. Chan Onn Leng, and Dr. T. Thinakaran, MASM has stood as a pillar of innovation and excellence. We are uniquely positioned as Malaysia's sole national entity recognised by the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) and the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS). This distinction highlights our pivotal role on the international stage and amplifies our voice in the global health and physical activity dialogue.

The Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine (MASM) is committed to excellence and leadership in Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science, guided by seven core objectives that collectively form the bedrock of our strategic vision and operational ethos. At the heart of our mission is the commitment to fostering a community marked by unity, integrity, and ethical governance. We emphasize the highest standards of professionalism, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring the overall well-being of the athletes of all levels of participation from various sports to special populations such as individuals with chronic diseases, children and adolescents, pregnant women, cancer survivors, para-athletes, and many more in the community we served. As a strategic advisor, MASM provides critical guidance to the government on Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science issues, aiming to shape impactful healthcare policies for all Malaysians.

MASM champions the cause of 'physical activity for all', actively promoting exercise and physical activity as pivotal means to combat the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases. This advocacy aligns with global health initiatives, particularly those of the World Health Organization, underscoring the importance of healthy lifestyles and active living in the community.

MASM organises diverse educational events such as conferences, workshops, and seminars to ensure our professionals remain at the forefront of the field. These platforms facilitate sharing new developments and innovations, equipping and educating our members with the frontier knowledge and skills to excel in the broad spectrum of Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science.

Research and the dissemination of scientific evidence form the cornerstone of our approach to advancing global knowledge in Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science. By publishing academic articles, position statements, and clinical practice guidelines, we contribute to national and international discourse, enhancing our global influence. One of our future plans is the expansion of services through our subcommittees to ensure comprehensive support across all aspects of Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science, while our active affiliations with international organizations like the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) and the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) amplify our collaborative efforts in enhancing the importance of this fraternity in national healthcare with the recognition by the international esteemed organisations.

With these objectives, MASM is poised to lead transformative initiatives that benefit our nation and contribute significantly to the global movement towards improved health through physical activity, sports and exercise. Together, we are committed to building a healthier and more vibrant community through the transformative power of Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science.
