ABOUT MASM

Founded in 1973, the Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine (MASM) represents a landmark development in the healthcare landscape in the country, especially in Sports and Exercise Medicine

The establishment of the MASM was from the visionary leadership of prominent figures, including Tan Sri Dr. Majid Ismail, Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Jegathesan Manikavasagam, Prof. Dr. Chan Onn Leng, and Dr. T. Thinakaran. These pioneers shared a profound commitment to establishing a definitive national body to integrate and champion professionals across the dynamic fraternity of Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science. Today, MASM stands as a formidable organisation comprising a diverse array of professionals such as sports clinicians — sports and exercise physicians, surgeons, cardiologists, psychiatrists, dentists, etc.—and sports and exercise scientists, along with exercise physiologists, performance nutritionists, sports psychologists, sports biochemists, sports biomechanists, performance analysts, and an array of allied health professionals like physical therapists/physiotherapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, sports rehabilitators, sports therapists, sports podiatrists, sports chiropractors, strength and conditioning experts, fitness instructors, coaches, physical educators, academicians, researchers, and passionate sports and exercise enthusiasts.

MASM is distinguished as the sole national entity in Malaysia recognized and affiliated with the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) and the International Federation of Sports Medicine (Fédération Internationale de Médecine du Sport - FIMS). This unique status underscores its critical role on both regional and international stages, pushing forward the boundaries of Sports and Exercise Medicine and Science.

In alignment with the latest initiatives from global and national health authorities, such as the World Health Organization’s Global Action Plan on Physical Activity, MASM's mission is centered around fostering robust collaborations and advancing education in Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science. The organization champions the cause of athletes at all levels—from elite professionals to recreational participants—and supports all individuals committed to regular exercise and physical activity. This broad reach extends to grassroots movements, where MASM is instrumental in promoting recreational physical activities through sports for all and educating the community about the profound benefits of a physically active lifestyle. Through these efforts, MASM aims to significantly reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, advocating for healthy, active living as a primary and secondary preventive measure in the community's health.

Moreover, MASM is relentlessly endeavouring to enhance public and professional understanding of the benefits and safe practices associated with sports, exercise, and physical activity. This proactive educational thrust is crucial in nurturing a healthier, more energetic population, demonstrating MASM's unwavering commitment to uplift physical, mental, and social well-being. By harnessing the transformative power of Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Science, MASM fosters a united and empowered community poised to meet the challenges of modern health with vigour and resilience.
